Racial Misalignment, Symbolic Repair and Imperial Legitimation in German National Socialist Portrait Photograph
A.K.M. Skarpelis is a cultural and comparative-historical sociologist utilizing qualitative and computational methods in research on race, social classification, violence, and artificial intelligence. She work on questions of racial classification, colonialism and technologies of state violence from the 18th to the 21st centuries in Germany, France, Japan and the US. Her current work on racial vision carries forward her concerns with race, technology and epistemology to study how scientists and other political actors translate their racial projects and perceptions into facial recognition technologies in ways that enshrine and naturalize incompatible forms of racial categorization.
Skarpelis will present new work forthcoming in the American Journal of Sociology. All are welcome!
