 ork University (NYU)This talk outlines a book project\, re-thinking the no
 tion of "the situation" in sociology. Based on some very (very) old debate
 s about potentiality and actualization\, I define situations as comprising
  of both the things that people make relevant within a particular context\
 , as well as the "proximate potentials" that they can reach for: that is\,
  both what they make explicit and possibilities of transformation that are
  ready to-hand. I then show how such an approach helps us think about both
  micro-level questions of the back and forth of interaction\, as well as a
 bout broader "macro-" phenomena such as that of Ann Swidler's unsettled ti
 mes or patterns of stability and change in public opinion.When: Tuesday 9
