The Department of Sociology, which includes the divisions of Gender Studies, Social Anthropology and Sociology, has elected a new head. Sandra Jönsson will assume the role on 15 November. We asked Sandra a few questions to introduce herself.

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I earned my PhD in work and organisational psychology at Lund University in 2005. After that, I spent many rewarding years at Malmö University, where I worked from 2007 to 2024 in teaching, research and various management roles, including Head of Department, Head of Unit and Director of a research centre.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

Collaborating on operational matters with dedicated colleagues – that’s something I truly enjoy. I’m also keen to gain a deeper understanding of how the faculty and the university function as a whole, and to get to know my colleagues in a new way.

What issues would you like to start addressing?

A key priority is how the department should be structured and organised going forward. In 2026, we need to continue working on both structures and working methods, as well as on work culture and the working environment. The challenge will be to keep several processes moving at the same time – without losing sight of education and research, which remain at the heart of our activities.

What do you think is the best thing about the department?

That we are a large and multifaceted department with many fascinating subjects and friendly, committed colleagues. And let’s not forget the building and its surroundings – it’s hard not to feel inspired by them.

Tell us something about yourself that isn’t in your CV – a fun fact.

Although I’m not a competitive person, I’ve spent countless hours by the football pitch – and still haven’t figured out what offside actually entails.

Until the end of the year, Sandra Jönsson will share the role of Head of Department with Acting Head Simon Turner. From 1 January 2026, he will return to his position as Assistant and Deputy Head of Department.

Facts about the Head of Department election

The Head of Department is appointed by the Dean following a proposal from eligible voters within the department. The Head of Department must have a deputy, referred to as the Deputy Head of Department, who is appointed in the same way.

Both the Head of Department and the Deputy Head of Department must be academically qualified teachers. The term of office is three years, but this election is a by-election; the next full term begins on 1 January 2027.
