Sociology in Lund

Education and research in sociology at the Department of Sociology, Lund University.

Sociology explores how people shape the society they live in – and how society, in turn, shapes people’s lives and values.

The term sociology originally refers to the study of the social. It is based on the idea that human beings are social creatures who develop through interaction with others.

Central themes in sociology include inequality and power, socialisation and identity, and individualisation and globalisation. These can be studied at different levels, often referred to as micro and macro. At the micro level, sociologists may study even the smallest details of a telephone conversation, while at the macro level, they examine relationships between states and organisations, as well as global cultural flows.

In other words, sociology examines how people shape the society they live in through interaction with others, and how that society in turn shapes their living conditions, values and opportunities for action.

Understanding and addressing societal challenges

Sociology examines key societal challenges from a social perspective, including inequality, environmental issues and climate change, globalisation, migration and mental health. Gaining a deeper understanding of society is often essential for addressing these challenges and creating meaningful change.

Research in sociology

Research in sociology spans micro, meso and macro levels and is often carried out in interdisciplinary collaboration.
