On Thursday, 4 September, the VIRTUTRIALS research team hosted their start-up seminar, welcoming 25 representatives from across Sweden’s legal landscape – including the Swedish Courts, Prosecution Authority, Swedish Bar Association, Prison and Probation Services, Victim Support Sweden, and more.

The seminar marked the official launch of VIRTUTRIALS: The Elusive Role of Physicality – Towards a New Understanding of Legal Participation, an ERC Starting Grant project led by Principal Investigator Lisa Flower. The event aimed to present the project and foster dialogue with practitioners working with video links in legal settings.

Inspiring and insightful

By engaging directly with professionals’ lived experiences, the seminar sought to anchor the research in practice and promote collaboration throughout the project’s duration. The meeting was described as both inspiring and insightful, laying a strong foundation for future exchanges.

The VIRTUTRIALS team includes doctoral students Jesse Wiles, Helena Andersen, and Mikaela Linell, as well as interns Amanda Ivarsson and Andreas Jonsson. The project will run until December 2029, with the next major seminar planned for 2027.
