The Sociology and Social Anthropology Seminar Series presents: Ghassan Hage

Bourdieu as an Anthropologist of Social Viability
Ghassan Hage
Prof. of anthropology, National University of Australia
What does it mean to think of anthropology as an analytic of the viable life? In this presentation, based on my book Pierre Bourdieu’s Political Economy of Being, I examine how we can think of Bourdieu as a key social scientist offering us such an analytics of viability. My aim is not to claim that such a perspective on Bourdieu is more authentic than others. I will however show how seeing Bourdieu in this way opens up modes of deploying his key analytic concepts: Habitus, Illusio, Capital and Field that highlights some of their eclipsed dimensions. This is in turn has important consequences on the way we interact and understand with our fieldwork material.
