Antoinette Hetzler Featured in International Anthology on Violence Prevention in School

Professor Antoinette Hetzler has contributed to the anthology Feeling Safe in School: Bullying and Violence Prevention Around the World, published by Harvard Education Press.

Professor Hetzler’s expertise concerns conflicts in Swedish schools. In her chapter “Abusive Behaviour in Swedish Schools: Setting Limits and Building Citizenship” she writes:

“Sweden has gone further than any other country in outlining and fighting not only bullying in schools but all behavior that can be considered abusive and affect the emotional well-being of students. This chapter analyzes two pertinent and related questions. First, why did Sweden legally enlarge the concept of unacceptable behavior at school to include all “abusive behavior?” Second, why was this step taken at this particular time? The chapter discusses the legal structure of Swedish schools and changes in school law and policy during the last fifty years as well as the goals that have influenced and shaped policy to ensure a safe educational environment for every student. Special focus is on the trends and tools of measurement that help realize the goal of zero tolerance for all abusive behavior in schools. The chapter concludes with comments and recommendations concerning practices and research in Sweden’s on-going fight against abusive behavior at school.”

Editors Jonathan Cohen and Dorothy L. Espelage compiled Feeling Safe in School to “highlight policy and practice recommendations for supporting children and adolescents to feel and be safe in school.” The anthology is scheduled for release in April 2020.
