The Sociology and Social Anthropology Seminar Series: Iddo Tavory
Revisiting 'The Situation' in Sociological Theory
Talk by Iddo Tavory
Professor of Sociology, New York University (NYU)
This talk outlines a book project, re-thinking the notion of "the situation" in sociology. Based on some very (very) old debates about potentiality and actualization, I define situations as comprising of both the things that people make relevant within a particular context, as well as the "proximate potentials" that they can reach for: that is, both what they make explicit and possibilities of transformation that are ready to-hand. I then show how such an approach helps us think about both micro-level questions of the back and forth of interaction, as well as about broader "macro-" phenomena such as that of Ann Swidler's unsettled times or patterns of stability and change in public opinion.
